The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration released its preliminary 2026 Atlantic hurricane season outlook on Monday, forecasting another above-average season with 16 to 20 named storms, 8 to 10 hurricanes, and 4 to 5 major hurricanes. The official season runs from June 1 through November 30.

NOAA scientists cited warmer-than-average sea surface temperatures across the main development region of the tropical Atlantic as the primary driver of the elevated forecast. La Nina conditions, which tend to reduce wind shear over the Atlantic and favor storm development, are expected to persist through the peak of hurricane season.

Last year's devastating season, which produced 22 named storms including Category 5 Hurricane Rafael, underscored the importance of early preparation. NOAA administrator Dr. Richard Spinrad urged coastal residents to finalize emergency plans and stock supplies well before the season begins.
