Emergency management agencies along the Gulf Coast kicked off their annual hurricane preparedness campaigns this week, conducting evacuation drills and public awareness events in anticipation of what forecasters expect will be another active season. Communities from Brownsville, Texas, to Pensacola, Florida, are participating in the coordinated effort.

In Houston, the Harris County Office of Homeland Security ran a full-scale evacuation drill involving over 2,000 residents in flood-prone neighborhoods. Participants practiced using designated evacuation routes and registering at emergency shelters. Officials said the exercise revealed several areas where communication systems and traffic management could be improved.

The drills come as many Gulf Coast communities are still recovering from damage inflicted by last year's storms. FEMA administrator Deanne Criswell emphasized that individual preparedness is the most critical factor in surviving a hurricane and urged every household to assemble an emergency kit and know their evacuation zone.
