A supercell thunderstorm produced hailstones the size of softballs across the northern suburbs of Dallas-Fort Worth on Tuesday evening, causing an estimated $200 million in property damage. The hardest-hit areas included Frisco, McKinney, and Allen, where cars were dented beyond recognition and rooftops were shredded by the onslaught of ice.
The National Weather Service measured the largest hailstone at 4.5 inches in diameter near the intersection of Highway 380 and the Dallas North Tollway. Windows were shattered in homes and businesses, and several greenhouses at a commercial nursery in McKinney were completely destroyed.
Insurance adjusters are expected to begin assessing claims on Wednesday, and industry experts predict the event could become one of the costliest hailstorms in Texas history. No serious injuries were reported, though several people were treated for cuts from broken glass at a shopping center in Frisco.
