A powerful late-season blizzard has dumped up to 40 inches of heavy, wet snow across portions of Montana and northern Wyoming, closing mountain passes and stranding motorists on interstate highways. The storm, driven by a deep upper-level trough, brought sustained winds of 50 mph that created whiteout conditions and drifts exceeding six feet.

Travel remains impossible across a wide swath of the northern Rockies, with both Interstate 90 and Interstate 15 closed through mountain sections. National Guard units have been activated to assist with stranded vehicle rescues and welfare checks on isolated rural residents.

Ski resorts in the region are celebrating the late-season dump, which adds a welcome boost to snowpack levels. Water resource managers note that the storm will significantly improve summer irrigation prospects for downstream agricultural communities.
