A potent spring storm system is forecast to deliver 12 to 18 inches of heavy wet snow across portions of Montana and northern Wyoming later this week. Winter storm watches have already been posted for elevations above 5,000 feet.
The storm will also bring significant wind, with gusts up to 55 mph creating blizzard-like conditions in open areas. Travel across mountain passes including Interstate 90 through Bozeman Pass could become extremely hazardous.
Despite the impressive snow totals, meteorologists note that April snowstorms typically melt quickly and provide valuable moisture for the region's water supply heading into the dry summer months.
