A stalled frontal boundary draped across the Gulf Coast is producing torrential rainfall that threatens to trigger widespread flooding from Houston to New Orleans through the remainder of the week. Some locations have already received eight to ten inches of rain in the past 24 hours, with an additional six to twelve inches forecast before the system finally moves out.
Flash flood emergencies have been issued for portions of southeastern Texas and southwestern Louisiana, where numerous roads are impassable and water rescues are underway. Bayous and rivers throughout the region are rising rapidly toward major flood stage.
The National Weather Service has warned that this event has the potential to become one of the most significant April flood events in Gulf Coast history, urging residents in low-lying areas to move to higher ground immediately if conditions worsen.
