A strong atmospheric river is taking aim at the Pacific Northwest this weekend, with forecast models projecting 4 to 7 inches of rain across western Washington and Oregon over a 48-hour period. Flood watches are being issued proactively.
Rivers already running high from recent snowmelt are expected to crest well above flood stage in several locations. The Chehalis, Skagit, and Snoqualmie rivers are of particular concern given their flood-prone histories.
The National Weather Service is coordinating with local emergency managers to pre-position resources and issue evacuation guidance for low-lying communities that have experienced repeated flooding events.
