A fast-moving derecho with straight-line winds exceeding 90 mph tore across central Iowa on Monday afternoon, flattening grain silos, ripping roofs from farmhouses, and snapping utility poles across a 200-mile swath. The National Weather Service confirmed the event as a derecho based on the continuous wind damage path exceeding 240 miles.
Agricultural losses are expected to be significant, with early-planted corn and soybean fields sustaining damage from the intense winds and large hail that accompanied the storm. The Iowa Farm Bureau estimates preliminary crop and infrastructure losses could exceed $300 million.
Emergency shelters have been opened in five counties as cleanup and damage assessment continue.
