The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration unveiled a groundbreaking artificial intelligence weather prediction model on Tuesday that officials say will extend accurate forecast windows by up to 48 hours. The system, called WeatherAI-3, was developed in partnership with Google DeepMind and trained on 40 years of global atmospheric data.

Early testing shows that WeatherAI-3 produces seven-day forecasts with accuracy comparable to current five-day forecasts from traditional numerical weather prediction models. The improvement is most pronounced for precipitation forecasting, where the AI model reduces errors by approximately 30 percent compared to existing operational models.

NOAA Administrator Dr. Richard Spinrad called the launch a 'paradigm shift' in weather forecasting technology. The model will run alongside existing forecast systems initially, with full operational integration expected by the end of 2026. Meteorologists will retain final authority over all public forecasts and warnings.
